According to NHS England there are 3.4 million people living with type 2 diabetes in the UK, with around 200,000 new diagnoses each year. Not only is type 2 diabetes currently estimated to cost the NHS around £8.8 billion a year, but there is also a significant personal cost to those individuals living with this disease, which if not controlled can lead to numerous complications and have a significant impact on quality of life.
Type 2 diabetes is generally regarded as being a chronic, progressive disease which over time leads to irreversible beta cell failure, with some patients eventually requiring long term medication. Whilst some individuals appear to be genetically at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, diet and lifestyle are understood to play a significant role in its development.
There is now a growing body of evidence to suggest that it may be possible to put type 2 diabetes into “remission” (where individuals with type 2 diabetes are able to get their HbA1c below 42 mmol/mol), through a combination of diet and lifestyle changes which support weight loss and improve the function of insulin in the body.
The Programme Includes:
A reduced calorie, reduced carbohydrate Mediterranean style diet, tailored to your individual needs, including current health, diagnosed medical conditions and any additional symptoms such as digestive issues or fatigue, any medications, personal preferences and time constraints. Please note: IF you are taking one or more blood sugar lowering medications, you MUST discuss suitability of a reduced carbohydrate diet with your GP before starting this programme. Medication does not exclude you from this programme but may require additional blood glucose monitoring or adjustments to medication* which will need to be discussed/managed by your GP. If you choose not to discuss this with your GP, you do so as an independent choice.
6 weekly one-to-one appointments providing on-going advice and accountability, help addressing physical or emotional barriers to change and the encouragement to stay motivated. These sessions can also be used to help you work through issues which may be contributing to stress such as poor work/life balance and low self-esteem or to help you work through other personal challenges. As part of your appointments we will track progress using a Tanita Body Composition Analyser which measures total body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), body fat, visceral fat, bone mass, muscle mass, physique rating, Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), metabolic age and hydration**.
Advice on lifestyle factors associated with overall health: Sleep, Stress Management and Activity Levels. Helping you develop strategies for improving quality and duration of sleep; identifying and addressing causes of stress and learning how to support relaxation through mindfulness and breathing exercises; and helping you to find achievable ways of incorporating more regular physical activity into your week.
